I am becoming ever convinced of what Rav Shapiro wrote(regarding the machah against the draft) that whoever reads blogs is damav berosho - I accidentally found an alarming article written by a writer whose site had a pretty harmless name - '********blogspot.com'. I was looking for something online about a certain inyan, and this thing popped up. The guy is some sort of mizrachi-maskil. anyways,  he collected various shaar blatt, and hagados that he found from hundreds of years ago, like the levush, tashbetz, etc. which have untznius illustrations of women. He claims that in europe at the time it was common to print books like this, and of course, being a maskil, he claims that this was acceptable to yidden at that time. I turned the pictures off the screen obviously, but I don't know how to understand any of this.

A collector of old seforim told me that the illustrations in old seforim were often done by non-jews, and the author wouldnt have any say over what they put in there. If his agenda was a bit different, he could have brought up all the illustrations based on Christian artwork.

As for why they allowed illustrations at all in this case, i don't know, it was probably at the publisher's discretion and they didn't have a say.

taon, that makes a lot of sense that it was done by christian artists, but one thing remains - I forgot to mention that there was one instance of a family chasima that the mechaber of a sefer on chumash called 'minchah belulh' had; he was from the Rappaport rabbinical family, and at the end of the sefer, he had a chhasima which had untznius pictures on it, so that remains a question. Rav Shapiro told me that it could very well be that he didn't mke it, but I guess this would require eserch to find out.
