L'Chvod Rabbi Shapiro, Shlita:

1) What is the difference between Slicha, Michila, and Kapara?

2) If C"V we do a sin Bayn Adam L'Chavayro,

why do we ask the person to be Mochel us and not Solayach us?

3) Why do we ask Hashem for all three: "Slach Lanu, Michal Lanu, Kaper Lanu" ?

Thank you.

Slicha seems to be asking for unintentional aveiros to be overlooked. Mechila is for more serious sins, and we can't expect them to be overlooked, we need a full cleansing of them, full forgiveness. I don't know about kaparah, I assume it is a further level. And asking people for slicha would probably get them upset, like we're trivializing what happened. Further, when people overlook something wrong another did, the anger still festers. SO we want mechilah. I guess we dont ask for mechilah/kaparah for everything because we may not deserve it.
