Hello, I go to an orthodox Jewish college (Not YU, the other one) and certain teachers are telling me that in the old country, many Jews were illiterate (We are talking about from the 1600s to early 19th century).

Is this true? Or just a maskilish falsehood?

Jews have always had a higher level of literaly and education, however there were some jews that were uneducated.
