I have learned than many cases of cancer can be prevented by modifiable risk factors-- such as tobocco, alcohol, physical activity and dietary intake. Specifically with dietary intake- there are foods that are extremely high in carcinogens (such as burnt hot dogs.)

Does the average person know this? I'm not sure.

I'm wondering- if a person consumes burnt hot dogs (consistently during the summer season- not unusal in our society) and he is unaware of this information- will Hashem protect him from getting cancer? Or was it his responsibility to do proper hishtadlus for good health (and educate himself about how to maintain his health)?

Considering how fickle such studies are, i wouldnt think its in the realm of histadlus. Although, not knowing something is dangerous wont negate the danger necessarily, it is just that you arent punished for not knowing something you shouldnt have known.
