I know that it is prohibited to cry on Shabbos.

My question is, is this "in general," or "with no exceptions."

Is it crying in and of itself - the actual tears - or the sadness. For example, what if one was crying tears of joy?

And what if someone is having a difficult time with something and needs a release of emotion through tears. Yes, I think that one should work to rise above it, and either push it off until after Shabbos, or deal with it through some other means than tears. But what if something is weighing heavily on a person, affecting their Shabbos, and they cannot push it off or deal with it in another way? Can they release that emotion through crying, l'halacha?

Thanks.

There is a disagreement in the Poskim (Taz and Eliyahu Rabbah) regarding crying to release sorrow on Shabbos. L'Maaseh, in a case such as you describe, you can rely on the lenient opinions.
