sometimes we might not feel comfortable reaching because we don't know what to say. However, we don't have to be a proffessional. Just being a good friend can make an impact. The impact might not happen right away, and it takes effort, time and patience. But every deed can help. A smile, a greeting, a general conversation about common interests, or inviting someone for shabbos are some ways to help. Plus, keeping cards with you from organizations and nicely handing it to someone who might be interested.

If it is in your past and done with, there is no problem telling them if you think it can help.
