On shabbos something really bad slipped out of my mouth. Without thinking before I spoke I said lashon hara about a whole community. I said "the horrible ppl of __ (city)". I really didn't mean it though. It was only a few people who I'm not such a fan of ... In any case, how do I do teshuva for this? How can I go to the whole city and ask them for forgiveness?? Is it ok if I only tell H' I'm sorry? how does this work..?

1) Regret that you did it.

2) Resolve not to do it again.

3) Tell the person you told it to that you didn't mean it and it was an exaggeration.

That's it.

What if it had been done in an online forum or in a public speech, and there is no way to reach all the people who heard it?

And would the teshuva be any different if it were said about a certain yeshiva or chasidus instead of about a city?

הַדּוֹרוֹת הַבָּאִים אַחֲרָיו, וְלֹא תַּגִּיעַ אֵלָיו מְחִילָה עֲבוּר זֶה, כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמְרוּ רַזַ"ל, הַמְדַבֵּר בִּפְגַם מִשְׁפָּחָה - אֵין לוֹ כַּפָּרָה עוֹלָמִית. עַל כֵּן צָרִיךְ לְהִתְרַחֵק מִמִּדָּה

גְּרוּעָה הַזֹּאת מְאֹד כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא יְהֵא, חַס וְשָׁלוֹם, אַחַר כָּךְ כִּמְעֻוָּת לֹא יוּכַל לִתְקֹן:

You can only do the best you can do. You should not give up. A public request of Mechilah and statement of regret can help. And try as best you can to fix what you did. More than that you cannot do. And learn a lesson for the future.

Also, it says in Seforim that if a person merits sufficient Siyata D'Shmaya, Hashem can help their Teshuva succeed even if they spoke Loshon Horah. Because the obstacle of Teshuva for the speaker of Loshon horah is that even after he does Teshuva, the false rumors he spread still continue to proliferate. But Hashem can stop the rumors from spreading further. So it is also important to pray that Hashem grant you Siyata D'Shmaya here, because for Teshuva to work on Loshon Horah, the damage needs to be undone, and that takes more help from Hashem than usual.
