I know that there are 49 + 1 days of the Omer and that during the Omer one should uphold a mournful attitude except for on Lag Ba'Omer the one day on the 33rd day of the Omer when wedding can take place and the people can be joyful. I have been told that one can keep one of the two halves of the Omer the first half, from the 2nd day of pesach to the 33rd day of the Omer OR from the 18th day of the Omer to the Last day. ALSO I have been told that one must keep BOTH halves. How does that work and what should i do?

My husband says: The key is 33 days. There are different ways of counting them. You can do whichever one you want and you can change it every year. If possible, you should follow your parents' or rabbi's minhag.

He says the reason people keep the whole thing is because if you count all the days, but leave out chol hamoed and shabbosim, you'll come to be keeping 33 days.

You do not have to keep both halves. There are those whose custom requires this, and others whose custom does not. You should follow whatever your family Minhag is. If you do not have a family Minhag, then you can follow whichever custom you want.
