These were the Gedolim (Torah authorities) who lived from around the year 600 CE to about 1000 CE. The two big Yeshivos in those days were the same as the big Yeshivos in the days of the Gemora - Sura and Pumbedisa.
The Geonim had many students, and they answered questions from Jews from far and wide. Often their written answers became Jewish classics, such as Sidur Rav Amram Gaon, or Igeres Rav Shria Gaon. Examples of Geonim were Rav Hai Gaon, Rav Saadiah Gaon, and Rav Sherirah Gaon.

When did Yidden first move to Europe en masse? Was it from Rabbeinu Gershom's times? And where did the original Ashkenazic / European Yidden come from -- Bavel or Eretz Yisroel? And why did they move to Europe? And were the Sefardim's ancestors from another area during the Amoraim period?
