I saw the following in "Praise My Soul" (Rav Miller):

"נְהַלֶּלְךָ ה' אֱלהֵינוּ בִּשְׁבָחות וּבִזְמִירות"

"With expressions of contemplation of Your wisdom & power & kindliness (שְׁבָחות),& with melodies (זְמִירות), which stir the mind & emotions & also express our love (song is an expression of love). 1-- שְׁבָחות &

2--זְמִירות represent the activity of 1) the intellect & 2) of the emotions

First, the mind, contemplates Hashem's praises & expresses it; afterword, the melody is employed to heighten the effect & to increase the enthusiasm (whereas melody without previous contemplation would merely create meaningless emotion)."
