I know that chachamim assured kiddushin b'biah, but I was curious (and mean this in a purely inquisitive way) .....during the period when it was allowed did the witnesses actually have to watch the act, or was it like the yichud room today where the witnesses just wait outside for a little while?

They only witnessed the Yichud.

It's not a silly question. (Even if there would be such a thing, this would not be one of them.)
