L'Chvod Rabbi Shapiro, Shlita:

1) Is visiting the grave of a deceased parent on the Yartzeit, beneficial for the parent's Nishama?

2) Is visiting the grave of a deceased parent on the Yartzeit, an obligation or a custom?

3) Can a person visit the grave within a week before the Yartzeit, or within a week after the Yartzeit, and still fulfill the obligation / custom,

especially if the Yartzeit comes out on Shabbos or Yom Tov,

or if, for some other reason, the child can't visit the grave on the Yartzeit date?

Thank you.

Visiting graves on Yohrtzeits is not nearly as important as people think. It is not obligatory, neither as  a Halacha or a MInhag. If someone feels that they are honoring their parent by doing so, let them go and honor their parent. But there is no obligation to go.

If someone cannot go for whatever reason, he should not feel bad about it at all. If he stays wherever he is and learns something l'zecher nishmas his parent he is accomplishing more than enough for his parent to alleviate any bad feelings he may have.
